I grew up in Buffalo, NY, and ended up in the Rochester area after relocating for work at Xerox. I am a mechanical engineer at my day job who has had an interest in investing in real estate for years but I have been active for the past three years. My primary focus in real estate is building a diverse portfolio of residential rental properties to create wealth and generate a passive income that can allow me to pursue other passions. I initially started investing in real estate to reduce my dependence on the corporate world after seeing how unpredictable and devastating it can be to have only one source of income. I currently, own residential properties and apartment buildings in Buffalo, Rochester, and Geneva New York. My day-to-day focus has become pursuing my passion for real estate and growing my engineering and manufacturing business, Balthasar Industries located in Rochester.

Our areas of expertise include acquisition, financing, property value growth/profitability, and property management. Our company motto is "Properties that our residents are proud to call home and we are proud to own."

We credit FFREIA for giving us an advanced degree in real estate through its many learning opportunities and mentorship by many FFREIA members.

DEALMASTERS

Buying? Selling? Looking for partners? Have questions about your first flip or how to find and gauge opportunities? This is the meeting for you!
Come network with people of all experience levels, find and close deals and learn about everything real estate other than property management.  Bring your questions!! Hosted by Joe LaBarbera of 855-Joe-Buys and Scott Speer, self-storage investor extraordinaire.

Joe LaBarbera

My name is Joe LaBarbera. I am a native of  Rochester New York. After high school, I attended college and quit after a year and a half. I began working in construction and landscaping but was tired of making minimum wage and barely able to sustain myself.

I was fed up with being broke and having a bleak and unprosperous financial future, I got involved in real estate investing for financial freedom and security.

I have been a full-time real estate investor since 2010. Over the years, I have been involved in hundreds and hundreds of real estate transactions, including wholesaling, fixing and flipping, and renting.
I am very excited about the unlimited possibilities that real estate has given me. I enjoy networking, meeting new people, and collaborating deals with other people.

I have learned that patience, persistence, and self-development is the key to this business. It takes work, and real estate can make you millions of dollars. The overall results can be limitless.

I am passionate, some might say obsessed, with real estate. In addition, I have had the opportunity to mentor and work with others who share my passion for real estate and are eager to build their own dreams.

Scott Speer

My lovely wife of 38 years, Chris (Baby Doll), and I were born and raised in Rochester, NY. after we were married, I went into the Air Force for six years, and we traveled all over the world.  I served during Desert Storm then we came back to Rochester to raise two wonderful children, Trevor and Ashley.
For a number of years, we invested in real estate with rentals, flips, wholesale, and various other real estate investments using our IRA’s, other people’s money, our own money, and bank loans. In 2019 we started selling off our portfolio and transitioned into investing in self-storage.
We purchased our first storage property in August 2018 with partners plus with input and help from many friends and coaches. We currently own over twelve facilities with more than 250,000 SqFt in ten states with different partners.
I am one of the original members of FFREIA and help cohost the FFREIA Subgroup AREIS {Alternative Real Estate Investing Strategies) with my good friend Joe LaBarbera where we discuss alternative ways to make money in real estate other than being a landlord. The main reason we continue to run this group is that we both know many have helped us to achieve the level of success we have, and it is our turn to “Give Back” and help others.
We both have a real passion to help others that are willing to put in the work achieve success in life and in real estate.
All of this has allowed us to achieve a long-time goal in November 2020 of selling our home and living in an RV Full Time traveling this beautiful country, seeing the sights, family, and friends, plus staying where they want, when they want, for as long as they want with no plans to slow down!

FFREIA Coffee Club

The Coffee Club meetup is meant to be a group for local investors to meet and share experiences on their journey to help others who are experiencing similar struggles. Although the group welcomes new members with little / no investing experience, we strive to attract and retain experienced investors in the business who can provide value to each other. Meetings are in the morning (contrary to most groups) and members of the group are required to come to the meetings regularly.

Kayla Thorp

Kayla is a full-time real estate professional and mom, born and raised in Rochester NY. Although she grew up here (and is happy to be back) her real estate career began in Westchester NY. First, she became a Realtor in 2015, and the next year she became the operations manager for a residential real estate investment firm that flipped dozens of houses a year. While she enjoyed flipping houses, her ultimate goal was to build long-term wealth and independence for herself and her family. She moved back to Rochester and met her husband shortly after. Together they have enjoyed building their residential rental portfolio for the past several years, and their current focus is on multifamily and commercial real estate. Through their journey in real estate Jake and Kayla discovered a passion for building financial and time freedom and empowering others to discover their potential to do the same. To that end, they have become involved with several education and advocacy-related groups in Rochester, and Kayla looks forward to bringing that passion to FFREIA, through RocWire (Women in Real Estate)!

When Kayla’s not busy buying property or talking someone’s ear off about real estate she enjoys spending time with her family, especially her husband and two sons.
